Injured leopard makes a run for it

Injured leopard makes a run for it

May 04, 2006, 10:15

A leopard, which lost part of one of its paws in a trap, has made a dash for freedom by escaping from the enclosure where it was being treated in the Eastern Cape. The pregnant leopard was first caught in a farmer's gin trap in the Baviaanskloof.

It was released into the Addo Elephant National Park only to be caught in another trap, which mauled her paw badly just outside the reserve. She lost her cub or cubs in the process.

Conservationists were to have darted her on Monday to assess her recovery and decide whether to release her again or put her down. However, she took the decision for herself, jumping a 2.5m high electrified fence.,2172,126770,00.html
