Groups sue Minnesota to stop lynx trapping

Wednesday 2 August 2006 at 23:03

Animal welfare groups Thursday filed suit in federal district court to stop lynx from being trapped accidentally in Minnesota, saying the state Department of Natural Resources has done nothing to stop the problem. The Humane Society of the United States and Help Our Wolves Live filed the suit in Minneapolis after they said efforts to resolve the issue were ignored by the DNR. Another group, the Animal Protection Institute, also is planning to sue the DNR this summer. That group is in talks with Maine officials over similar lynx trapping issues but said the Minnesota DNR has rebuffed any effort to resolve the issue. Defenders of Wildlife also has threatened a lawsuit. The suits, if successful, could have a dramatic effect on trapping in the northern reaches of Minnesota for years to come.
