Young female is 12th cougar killed in SD hunting season

A deer hunter shot the 12th mountain lion of the current season Sunday about seven miles northwest of Hill City.

The female lion was 1-1/2 years old and weighed 82 pounds, Game, Fish & Parks regional supervisor Mike Kintigh said Sunday night.

The lion season ends Dec. 31, but it ends immediately if hunters have killed 25 total lions or eight females. If two more female lions are shot, the season will end.

The 11th lion of the season was shot Saturday, also by a deer hunter.

Both weekend hunters had licenses for lions, Kintigh said, but neither was actively hunting the cats.

Lion hunters are responsible for knowing how many

lions have been killed, and they must report their kills to the state Game, Fish & Parks Department within 24 hours.

For lion season "harvest status," call 1-866-895-9067. To report a kill, call the Game, Fish & Parks Department in Rapid City at 394-2391 during business hours or State Radio in Rapid City at 393-8121.
