Indian couple trap hungry leopard

By Indo Asian News Service

Shimla, Dec 6 (IANS) A hungry leopard attempting to kill a barking dog instead got trapped in a room in a Himachal Pradesh village, thanks to the courage and the presence of mind of a couple.

Local reports said the incident took place in a remote mountainous Pekadhar village in Rohru valley, some 120 km from here, when a barking dog awoke Sita Ram Jhamta and his wife Shyama Devi who found to their surprise a leopard in the veranda about to pounce on the dog Tuesday.

On hearing the commotion, the nervous female leopard rushed towards an open room and ended up clawing the couple. A brave Jhamta managed to hit the big cat on the head repeatedly with a hammer, but the dazed beast leapt into the empty room that was bolted by the couple from outside.

Villagers soon gathered and the local authorities were informed.

Jhamta and his wife are being treated at a nearby hospital. While the villagers want the leopard to be sent to a zoo, animal rights activists say the female leopard that could be raising cubs should be set free.
