A landowner in Fall River County killed a mountain lion Sunday, becoming the first ever to take advantage of a special hunting season.

The state Game, Fish and Parks Department announced that a 124-pound male lion, 2 or 3 years old, was harvested on the edge of the Black Hills. The state's second Black Hills lion season closed Nov. 19, but the prairie season remains open through Dec. 31 for landowners hunting their own land. This was the first lion taken in the prairie season.

The landowner, whose name was not released, was working cattle when he spotted the lion.
