Leopard found dead in Indian tea estate - poisoned?

SILIGURI, May 22: A male leopard was found dead at Fulbari Patan Tea Estate under Matigara police station area today. Workers of the tea estate spotted the dead leopard around 6:30 a.m. and brought the matter to the notice of the management officials. Later, the wildlife officials were informed.

Mr Parash Singh, an eyewitness, said the leopard was found lying on the pathway of section number seven of the tea estate. No injury mark was visible on any part of the leopard's body.

Forest officials of the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife-I, later brought the five-year old dead leopard to the Sukna Animal Rescue Centre. After a post mortem, the dead leopard was cremated by the wildlife personnel.

"Prima-facie it seems the leopard died after consuming poisonous food. However, we would wait for the postmortem report to ascertain the cause of the death," said Mr Madhusudhan Karmakar, ranger, wildlife squad, Wildlife-I. The postmortem report is expected by tomorrow.
