A lion cub has been found dead while a lioness has been spotted in a paralysed condition in Gir Sanctuary.

"The cub has been found dead in Mitayana range of Amreli district today," said Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Bharat Pathak.

"The cub died during an in-fighting among the beasts. While the lioness was found suffering from fever from the same range yesterday", he added.

"The lioness has been taken to a veterinary hospital in Sasan town of Junagadh district for treatment," Pathak said.

The cub is the eighteenth Asiatic lion to have died in the sanctuary in the past four months.

Of these, eight have fallen victims to poachers while some fell into open wells in and around the sanctuary
