PIEDMONT, S.D. (AP) mountain lions are blamed for killing 38 pet peacocks near Piedmont a Black Hills town about halfway between Rapid City and Sturgis.

The owner of the birds contacted the Game, Fish and Parks Department, and one of the lions was killed yesterday by a game warden.

Two other lions are believed to have been involved in killing the peacocks, and the birds' owner says he's now carrying a shotgun and he worries about kids in his neighborhood.

Officials have estimated the mountain lion population at about 200 in the Black Hills.

A first-ever hunting season for mountain lions in South Dakota was established in 2005.

The Game, Fish and Parks Commission will finalize details later this week of the third annual season for the big cats.
