Two rehabbed cheetahs shot to death in Botswana

From Cheetah Conservation Botswana:

It is with the greatest sadness and regret that we have to report the deaths of two of our three rehabilitated cheetahs, Gracie and Alice. We are all, naturally, shaken by the news and no one more so than Ann Marie, who has worked tirelessly and with the utmost dedication in the rehabilitation programme created for Decu, Gracieand Alice.

From reports received on Saturday 23rd June, Gracie was, at first, thought to have been hit by a vehicle on a South African border road. Whilst coming to terms with the news and attempting to discover more obout Gracie's fate, we then received the bitter blow that Alice had been shot during the previous weeks. It later transpired that Gracie, too, had in fact died as a result of a gunshot wound.

We know the fortunes of these cats has been closely followed by many of you, our donors and supporters here and around the world and we are sensitive to the fact that their loss will be felt by many of you and our former volunteers who, during 2005 and 2006, assisted Ann Marie with the day-to-day care of the cubs. The surviving cat, Decu, continues to thrive and we are monitoring his movements as closely as is possible.

Please visit the Newsletter section of now, where the very latest edition of 'Cheetah Tracks' (June 2007) contains more details about the above news, as well as some of our recent significant achievements. There is also a new item in the Downloads section for you.

As always, we sincerely appreciate your continuing encouragement, feedback and valuable support.

Best regards,

Brian Jones
