Fifth mountain lion shot -- another female
By Journal staff - Wednesday, January 07, 2009
The killing of a fifth female mountain lion in less than a week means hunters already have shot one-third of the number allowed in this year's season, a state Game, Fish & Parks official reported Wednesday.
A hunter turned in an 84-pound, 1-1/2 to 2-1/2-year-old lioness on Wednesday that had been killed Tuesday in the Northern Hills, GF&P regional supervisor Mike Kintigh said. He said he was not surprised that hunters have shot only female lions, because females tend to range close to their mothers. The mountain lion season runs Jan. 1 through March 31, but closes immediately when either 35 total lions or 15 female lions are killed.
All permit holders are required to make daily status checks on the lion tally. For mountain lion season information, call 1-866-895-9067 or go online to www.sdgfp.info/Wildlife/MountainLions/MtLionseasonstatus.htm.
