KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) Whitefish police shot and killed a mountain lion that had been seen around area houses.

The lion was killed Tuesday after a resident reported seeing it under the breezeway of their home.

Erik Wenum, wildlife conflict specialist for the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, says the young lion had been frequenting residences for a little over three weeks, but efforts to locate or trap the lion were unsuccessful.

FWP Wildlife Manager Jim Williams says the agency has a no-tolerance policy for lions in highly urbanized settings because of public safety concerns.
