Ding dong bell, very big pussy in the well
The Observer, Sunday 29 March 2009
An Indian wildlife ranger carries a leopard to safety after it fell into an open well in the village of Sonaighuli, near Guwahati, in Assam, yesterday.
The big cat was anaesthetised before being lifted with the help of a makeshift pulley. Residents had seen it prowling around the village but when they came to draw water in the early hours, they discovered the animal trapped. Fortunately there was little water in the well.
Instances of wild animals such as leopards and tigers straying into residential areas are not new in India. Depleted forest cover is one of the main reasons animals wander into villages and suburbs.
