NEW DELHI: With the arrest of seven men from Delhi and Nagpur, the CBI on Monday claimed to have busted an international racket of illegal trafficking of wildlife articles, especially tiger and leopard skins. The seized items were meant to be smuggled to neighbouring countries.

Five men who were arrested from Nagpur were identified as Charan Das, Amit Kumar, Ranjeet, Sadhu and Ram Swaroop. Two others arrested from Delhi are Tashi Tshering and Tashi Ladoe.

"With inputs from Wild Life Crime Control Bureau, a CBI team raided a general coach of the Yashwantpur-Hazrat Nizamuddin Sampark Kranti Express near Nagpur railway station and recovered two tiger skins. There were tiger bones and other body parts including teeth wrapped in clothes,'' said a CBI official.

Later, with the inputs gathered during the interrogation of those arrested at Nagpur, a key member of this gang was nabbed at Delhi and two leopard skin, one Otter skin and Red Sandalwood were recovered from his possession. The cost of a tiger skin in the international market is around Rs 10 lakh. The cost of tiger bones is around Rs 80,000 per kg.

Further, on the disclosure of Delhi-based accused, six more Otter skins were also recovered from the possession of another member of this gang from a premises at Majnu Ka Tila, Delhi. Investigation has revealed that it was a module of international racket engaged in procuring the wildlife articles from poachers located in different part of the country and subsequent smuggling to other neighboring countries through their traditional routes.
