Protection Sought for Mountain Lions

A little over a week has passed since a deer hunter shot and killed what may very well have been the only mountain lion in Iowa. Residents and wildlife supporters from around the country are outraged not only that this killing happened but that it was, and remains, completely legal under Iowa law. Until protection is given to rare and dispersing lions like the one killed last week, mountain lions will never recover their historic range.

Did Champlin Cougar Cross River into Wisconsin?

Earlier this month video footage of a cougar in Champlin, Minnesota, received a large amount of media coverage. Many residents were excited while others worried about the safety of their children and pets. Biologists reassured the community that lions rarely pose a threat and this one would likely move on in search of habitat and a mate. Luckily the cat was not killed and did just that. After tracking him for a few weeks, biologists now believe the cougar may be in Wisconsin. Covering an average of six miles (linear) per day, the cougar has made its way to a state where he's legally protected. Biologists will continue their tracking research to better understand lions and their movements.

Lawsuit to Be Filed Over Delay in Protecting Florida Panther Habitat

The 90-day timeline for the US Fish & Wildlife Service to respond to a scientific petition for designating critical habitat for endangered Florida panthers expired last week. After no response, the Center for Biological Diversity - backed by numerous other environmental groups and activists - has now filed a 60-day notice of intent to sue the USFWS. Although not in time for the holidays, Florida panthers are one step closer to the habitat they so desperately need for their species to recover.
