A Grassy Butte man hunting with hounds killed the eighth mountain lion in Unit 1 Friday, closing the season for that part of the state.

Bob Christophersen killed the 80-pound female 18 miles west of Grassy Butte filling the unit’s eight-cat quota.

Stephanie Tucker, furbearer biologist with the Game and Fish Department, said when she examined the cat it was frozen, making it difficult to determine the age by examining the teeth.

She estimated the mountain lion was between 2 and 3 years old.

Unit 1 comprises the area around the Badlands.

Zone 2, the remainder of the state where there is no quota, will remain open through March 31, 2010.
