BELLE FOURCHE -- Officials killed a young male mountain lion Friday after the injured cat had taken a deer carcass under a cedar tree in the yard of a rural home southeast of Belle Fourche in Lawrence County.
"As a result of the possible hazards of a mountain lion in the yard, it was decided that the cat would be destroyed because it met the criteria of a human safety risk," said South Dakota Game Fish & Parks Department conservation officer Bill Eastman.
"The cat was the stereotypical young male likely displaced from the Black Hills and forced to relocate to new areas," Eastman said. "It is a young male approximately 1-1/2 to 2 years old and weighed 92 pounds."
