Lion hunting season opens

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The largest quota yet is in place for Friday's start of the mountain lion hunting season in the Black Hills.

The season runs Jan. 1 through March but will end early if 25 female lions or a combination of 40 male and female lions are killed.

The hunting season is limited to South Dakota residents.

The season quota has increased each year since the first season in 2005 when the harvest limit was five female lions or 25 total.

Hunters have 24 hours to report the kill and show the carcass to a Game, Fish and Parks Department employee.
